Occupy Mashtots Park Update from Armenia, Police action underway; Mitt, “Planned Parenthood, we’re gonna get rid of that.”
March 14: Breaking News from Ursula Kazarian, President, Founder Armenian Environmental Network: I want to preface this with a memory I have of rubber bullets and large hoses being used on peaceful protests in front of Parliament in March 2004. This is not quite there yet, but we have a duty to keep our eyes on this as it develops to ensure that the violence stops and does not escalate!
This copied from Vaché Thomassian who is at the site (for English speakers): The police staged a fake fight with yelling and swearing between civilians and behind the new kiosks. With our attention diverted towards that side nearly a hundred police officers encircled our tents with people still sleeping inside the tents. The tent was destroyed and people were thrown to the ground and taken away. Immeditately afterwards, around 300 police came out from behind the kiosks. EVERYONE COME TO THE PARK. THEY
Quote from Arpine Galfayan (of the Institute for Democracy and Human Rights): “Around 9.30 pm Armenian time (dark outside), the police performed an anti-constitutional action and exercised violence towards peaceful protesters, doing a 24-hour sit-in in Mashtots Park Yerevan. At that time there were around 30 protesters in the park and about 300 policemen, who literally “stole” the protesters’ tent with all the belongings inside, with no prior notification (and even 1 protester was sleeping in the tent and was thrown out from it). Once the news spread, from 9.30 and till 1am more than 200 people mobilized in the Park. At this moment, more than 50 people are there planning to stay overnight. Activists announced that at 4pm tomorrow, we will put not one but several tents in the park. We will do it during daylight, in transparent and public manner (unlike some do). We will stand for our constitutional rights till we fully win them.”
The confrontation follows a “Green Court” trial held by the activists at the Park: On Monday environmentalists held a “green court” to put the city. The accusation: the city’s illegal authorization for kiosks to be constructed in a Mashtots Park. The verdict: (1) Yerevan officials have until this Friday to dismantle the kiosks in a public garden; (2) unless the city does so environmentalists will begin to dismantle the kiosks themselves. The trial was initiated because the “official” courts were reluctant to accept lawsuits against the decision by the Yerevan municipality. The Occupiers declared that this trial would be the first in a series of “public trials” to defend public property. ROMNEY: Eliminate federal funding for Planned Parenthood. Our previous post focused on Rick Santorum as a very scary candidate who feels qualified to judge the faith of others, including the President. Santorum is also is opposed to a woman’s right to choose and medical payment for contraception. After his 3rd place loss in Alabama and Mississippi, Mitt apparently wants to out do Santorum. So in this TV News Interview he promises to do all he can to throw Planned Parenthood under the bus. ..
Wait a minute, isn’t that what got thousands of folks to stop donating to the Susan G. Komen Foundation?
